WWF Observation Cabins

We designed a facility for bird protection and observation in the lagoon of Orbetello, on the west coast of the Italian peninsula. In general, architecture is an act of destroying the natural environment in order to gain space. However, we will explore alternative approaches that are appropriate for nature conservation facilities.
The two main points of the design are to provide all the necessary energy from sunlight, and to create a structure that would have a low environmental impact if used for a long time. The entire system consists of a "power generation part" and a "function part. The "power generation part" will enclose the site in a circle with a group of solar panels 6 meters above the ground. It is supported by metal piles that are grounded in a minimum area. The number of panels was roughly calculated based on the amount of electricity required for the facility. The "functional part" is a wooden unit suspended from the "power generation part" to fulfill the functions of a bird observatory, lodging, visitor center, restaurant, etc. No foundation is required, so the ground will not be disturbed every time it is rebuilt. In addition, the length of the main components is unified to facilitate replacement, expansion, and disassembly of the units.
