「町家のウラオモテ、多様ないきづかい」

京町家をコンバージョンし、地域コミュニティ施設を軸として利活用する提案を求められたコンペ。京都をはじめとするさまざまな場所で、町家を地域コミュニティ施設として転用する事例が見受けられる。コミュニティ施設に変わる際に、もともと住居として使われていた町家の「ウラ」にあたる空間が手つかずのまま放置されることが多い。これらの未利用の「ウラ」は、暗さや天井の低さが原因で、コミュニティ施設としての日常的な利用には向いていない。そこで、これらの空間を強引にコミュニティ施設に取り込むのではなく、観光客などの地域外の人たちが一時的に訪れる場として活用することを提案する。こうすることで、独自の雰囲気を持つ空間が、むしろ特別な体験として記憶に残るのではないだろうか。

 

 This competition asked for proposals for converting machiya in Kyoto and utilizing them as local community facilities. In Kyoto and many other places, there are examples of machiya being converted into local community facilities. When converted to community facilities, the spaces that correspond to the "ura(backs)" of machiya, which were originally used as residences, are often left untouched. These unused "ura" are not suitable for daily use as community facilities due to their darkness and low ceilings. Therefore, rather than forcibly incorporating these spaces into community facilities, we propose that they be used as temporary places for tourists and other people from outside the community to visit. In this way, the spaces with their unique atmosphere will be remembered as a rather special experience.
